Chapter Fifteen

“I think Dave’s a siren,” I said to Jerry three days later, over a coffee for him and a protein shake for me.

Dave really hadn’t liked the picture I’d shown him, the one with the siren hags and the butchered pirates. He’d been trying to win my trust at the time. Pointing at the monstrous depictions and nodding, hey, yeah, that’s me! wouldn't have gone far toward helping him achieve his goal.

“Huh?” Jerry had been examining the bottle of protein shake on the table between us. He gestured at me with it. “Is this stuff expensive? Because I’m thinking I could get me some, Joe. You are glowing.”

“I’m exuding manly vitality,” I corrected him. And I didn’t think it was because of anything that came from a bottle.

I don’t remember Dave leaving that first night we made love.

I’d woken up alone to protesting hip flexors, bone-deep satisfaction, and an overwhelming urge to do laundry. The fitted sheet had popped off all four corners of the mattress, the pillows and duvet had been balled up in the middle of the bed, and all of it was disgraceful. Dave had shuffled me into the centre of his little nest before he’d curled his big body around me. We’d fallen asleep that way.

He came back the following evening and we’d had a replay. Last night, however, he was a no-show.

I was both cranky at his absence and utterly relieved. A few hours without losing my mind in searing ecstasy sounded nice and relaxing.

“Must be you’re glowing because you’re happy and in love.” Jerry passed the bottle over when I gestured for it. “Though I can’t say as it ever made me sparkle quite like you. Then again, you’ve got that whole handsome thing going on. You’re not exactly starting from scratch like the rest of us.”

“A siren,” I said loudly, scowling with discomfort. Handsome and sparkling were some of the last words I’d use to describe myself. Ordinary sprang to mind. As did disaster. “I’m thinking Dave is a siren.”

Jerry pulled out his phone and scrolled through a few screens. He turned it to face me. “Like this?”

He showed me the same picture I’d shown Dave. Pirates versus sea hags.

I winced.

“Just how bad does he look in the morning?” Jerry asked. He zoomed in close on one of the sirens’ faces and shuddered.

I pushed the phone away. “Dave has got nothing in common with them,” I snapped.

“All right, no need to get snippy. Why d’you think he’s a siren, then? Does he sing?”

“He does, actually.”

Jerry blinked. “He any good?”

I shifted in my chair and nodded. “Yeah,” I said. “Pretty good.”

Our lovemaking came with its own soundtrack. It was more than pretty good. It was…okay, it was weird. But I liked it.

“What’s he sing?” Jerry grinned. “Bit of Britney? Gaga? Katy Perry?”

“Madonna.”

“Reeeallly.” Jerry pushed back from the table and crossed his arms. He nodded a few times. “Old school. Nice.”

I didn’t feel like breaking it to him that Britney was considered old school at this point.
